About Action and the role

Action is one of Europe’s fastest-growing non-food discount retailers, with more than 3,000 stores in over 14 countries and its headquarters in Zwaagdijk-Oost. The next step is the United States — and with that comes a highly fragmented, fast-changing multi-state tax landscape that needs a dedicated owner.

As SALT Manager, you are responsible for Action’s US State & Local Tax obligations across multiple jurisdictions. You combine deep technical expertise with a pragmatic approach: supporting business expansion — store openings, e-commerce and the logistics footprint — while ensuring strong compliance, controls and risk management.

You join Group Tax and report to the Head of Tax. The role has no direct reports initially. You work closely with Finance, IT, Supply Chain, Commercial teams and external tax advisors to support Action’s US activities and continued growth.

What will you do?

Compliance & nexus

  • Oversee sales & use tax compliance across all relevant US jurisdictions: tax determination, collection, reporting, remittance and exemption certificate management.
  • Monitor and assess economic and physical nexus, including the impact of store openings, e-commerce activities and the logistics footprint.
  • Identify and quantify potential SALT exposures and lead remediation, such as registrations and voluntary disclosure agreements.

Business advisory & audits

  • Advise the business on the SALT implications of commercial decisions, supply chain changes, pricing, expansion and new market entries.
  • Manage sales & use tax and other state/local tax audits as the primary contact for tax authorities, developing defensible audit positions.

Tax technology, control & reporting

  • Ensure effective use and configuration of tax determination systems; work with IT and Finance to improve data quality, automation and tax processes.
  • Identify and monitor SALT risks, embed controls within the Tax Control Framework and ensure robust documentation and audit trails.
  • Report on SALT risks, exposures and regulatory developments to the Head of Tax, and manage external advisors where needed.
What you bring

You are a technically strong, hands-on SALT professional who is comfortable in a fragmented and fast-changing multi-state environment. You analyse complex issues, translate them into clear business guidance and take ownership from assessment through implementation.

Must-haves

  • A Master’s degree in Tax, Accounting or a related field.
  • Around 5–10 years of relevant US State & Local Tax experience.
  • Strong experience with sales & use tax in multi-state environments, and deep technical knowledge of US state/local tax regimes.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to manage complex and changing tax requirements.
  • Strong stakeholder management and the ability to work cross-functionally with Finance, IT, Supply Chain and Commercial teams.

Strong pluses

  • Experience gained at a Big Four firm, tax advisory or law firm, and/or an in-house tax function.
  • Hands-on experience with tax determination systems and tax process automation.
  • A pragmatic, hands-on mindset with strong attention to detail.
What success looks like
  • No unexpected SALT exposures or audit surprises.
  • Accurate and efficient sales tax collection and reporting.
  • Early identification of nexus and compliance risks.
  • Strong control over audit processes and outcomes.
  • Clear ownership of SALT within the tax function.

Why Action?

  • A greenfield mandate: be the first owner of US State & Local Tax as Action enters the United States.
  • A highly impactful, strategic role reporting to the Head of Tax, with visibility at executive level.
  • One of Europe’s fastest-growing retailers: 3,000+ stores in 14+ countries, managed from the Dutch HQ.
  • Broad scope: from nexus and compliance to audits, tax technology and the Tax Control Framework.
  • Strong total reward: base up to €166K, 15–30% STI, LTI after three years and a lease car or car allowance.
  • An international, inclusive workplace with over 120 nationalities; Action supports more than 2,000 children through SOS Children’s Villages.
