Type Permanent position
Experience Minimum 2 years

Tax Specialist Compliance & Technology is a permanent position in Rotterdam within Tax, placed by The Sourcing Partners — boutique executive search for Finance, Tax and Legal in the Benelux.

About this role

Mercuria is one of the world's largest independent energy and commodity trading companies — and their Rotterdam tax team is actively rethinking how fiscal work gets done. This is not a traditional compliance role. You own your own portfolio of entities and jurisdictions, contribute to tax accounting, and help build the AI-driven tooling that gives the team real-time fiscal insight. For a tax professional with 3 to 8 years of experience who wants more than filling in what's already there, this is a meaningful next step.

About Mercuria

Mercuria was founded in Geneva in 2004 by Marco Dunand and Daniel Jaeggi, and has grown over two decades into one of the world's leading commodity trading groups — operating in over 50 countries, employing 1,300+ people of 65+ nationalities, and generating gross revenues of $174 billion. That scale is not accidental. It reflects a business model built around connecting markets, managing complexity, and staying ahead of change.

In recent years, Mercuria has made a decisive strategic shift toward the energy transition — investing more than $2 billion into over 50 energy transition companies, well ahead of their own 2025 target. From renewables and biofuels to technology metals, EV infrastructure and carbon markets: this is a company that puts capital behind its convictions.

As co-founder and President Daniel Jaeggi puts it: "The world is dynamic, and things change all the time. Our job is to react to circumstances and figure out how to optimize the energy system now and for the future." That mindset runs through the whole organisation — including the tax team in Rotterdam.

The Role

You will join Mercuria's direct tax team in Rotterdam, working closely with the International Tax Compliance Manager and the Head of Tax Compliance & Technology (NL). The role covers a broad range of compliance, reporting and technology-driven work — with real ownership from day one.

Technology is not a separate workstream here. It runs through everything the team does — from how returns are prepared to how management is informed. You will be part of building this, not just using it.

Compliance & Reporting
  • Working closely with senior regional tax staff and external advisers to ensure timely filing of the Group's global tax returns and payments
  • Managing Withholding Tax, Local File and Country-by-Country reporting requirements
  • Supporting and preparing responses to enquiries and tax audits across foreign jurisdictions
Tax Accounting
  • Supporting the tax accounting cycle — including periodic tax provisioning, current and deferred tax calculations, and balance sheet management
  • Liaising with statutory auditors at closing (experience here is a plus, not a must)
Reporting & Commercial Projects
  • Contributing to tax management reporting in close collaboration with Geneva headquarters
  • Participating in commercial projects including group restructurings, acquisitions and disposals
Technology & Innovation
  • Contributing to tax technology initiatives: working with data outputs and dashboards, helping automate and improve compliance workflows
  • Participating in AI-assisted analysis of intercompany positions and fiscal reporting
  • Working with data pipelines and dashboards that feed real-time fiscal insight to management
What We're Looking For

We are looking for candidates with roughly 3 to 8 years of relevant tax experience — from an ambitious professional ready to take on real responsibility, to a more seasoned specialist looking for a broader platform. What matters most is not the number of years, but the combination of solid fiscal grounding, a collaborative mindset and genuine curiosity about where the tax profession is heading.

Must-haves
  • 3–8 years of relevant tax experience — gained at a tax advisory firm, law firm or in-house tax department. In-house experience is a plus
  • Degree in Tax or Accounting — solid knowledge of corporate income tax and a genuine feel for the numbers behind the return
  • Dutch language skills strongly preferred — key role in supporting the Dutch fiscal unity
  • Fluent in English — daily communication with colleagues and advisers across jurisdictions
  • Accurate, deadline-driven and collaborative — multiple reporting cycles run in parallel; transparency is essential
  • Result-oriented, disciplined and quality-driven — strong problem-solving instinct in an international setting
  • Rotterdam-based — minimum 3 days per week in the office

Nice-to-haves
  • Tax accounting experience — provisioning, deferred tax, balance sheet management
  • Digitally curious and hands-on — comfortable working with data and tools. Experience with Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot, Alteryx, Power BI or Vertex is a genuine plus
  • Pillar 2 / GloBE — knowledge is welcome, not a hard requirement
  • Tax technology projects — prior involvement in digitalisation or process automation
  • Commodity, energy or industrial environment — sector affinity is an advantage
Why Mercuria
  • Unique career paths. Tax at Mercuria sits inside a fully integrated commodity group — trading, assets, investments, environmental products, shipping, financing. The exposure you build here simply does not exist at a single-discipline firm.
  • Continuous innovation — for real. The team is actively building AI tools, dashboards and real-time data pipelines. Mercuria hosts global hackathons where interdisciplinary teams solve energy transition challenges. You will be part of building this, not just observing it.
  • Real commitment to the energy transition. More than $2 billion invested into 50+ energy transition companies — well ahead of their own 2025 target. As a tax professional here, you work at the heart of a business reshaping its own industry.
  • Genuinely diverse. Employees aged 20 to 77, 65+ nationalities. Trading floors, advisory firms, law offices, engineering — the mix is intentional.
